History Tutoring in Nairobi

History asks students to know what happened, to explain why it happened, and to judge which explanation is strongest. The last part is where most marks are won and lost. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach History one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online, with tutors who know your child’s syllabus and the topics their school has chosen.

Curricula and levels we cover

  • Primary and Junior School: the history content in CBC/CBE Social Studies, Cambridge Primary and Checkpoint, and Common Entrance History at 11+ and 13+.
  • Cambridge IGCSE History (0470): the core content option chosen by your child’s school, the depth study, and the source-based paper.
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE History.
  • A-Level History: Cambridge International and Edexcel, at AS and A2.
  • IB: MYP Individuals and Societies, and Diploma History at SL and HL, including the historical investigation.
  • KCSE History and Government: Paper 1 and Paper 2, covering Kenyan, African and world history, and the Government content on the Constitution of Kenya and the structures of government.

History courses differ widely between schools because of topic choices. At the consultation we ask which options your child studies, and we match a tutor who teaches them. Our curricula page has more on each system.

What a History tutor focuses on

Many students know a lot of history but write answers that tell the story instead of answering the question. A tutor teaches them to argue: to make a point, support it with precise evidence, explain how the evidence supports the point, and link it back to the question.

Lessons usually cover:

  • Content: clear timelines, key events, people and causes, organised so they are easy to revise.
  • Causation and consequence: ranking causes and explaining how they connect, not just listing them.
  • Source analysis: reading a source for its message, then judging its usefulness and reliability through its origin, purpose and context.
  • Essay writing: planning, building a line of argument and reaching a clear judgement.

Source questions

Source questions appear in IGCSE, A-Level, IB and KCSE History. Students often comment on a source in general terms, for example “it is biased”, without explaining how or why that matters. Tutors teach a method for each question type and practise it on past paper sources until it becomes routine.

KCSE History and Government

KCSE History and Government combines history with civic content. Students need accurate knowledge of Kenya’s constitution, government institutions and citizenship, as well as historical topics. Questions often ask for a set number of points, so tutors teach students to write clear, distinct points that match the marking.

Essay writing at A-Level and IB

At A-Level and IB, essays need sustained argument and an awareness of different interpretations. Tutors work on planning under time pressure, writing strong introductions and conclusions, and using historians’ views where the syllabus expects it. For IB students, tutors also guide the planning of the historical investigation within the IB’s rules.

As exams approach, our exam preparation service adds timed essays, past papers and detailed feedback.

Frequently asked questions

My child memorises a lot but still gets average marks. Why?

Usually the answers describe events instead of answering the question. The tutor shows your child how to turn knowledge into an argument, and practises this on past questions.

Do tutors know the topics my child’s school has chosen?

We ask for the exact options at the consultation and match a tutor with experience of those topics.

Can you help with the Government part of KCSE History and Government?

Yes. Tutors cover both the history and the government content, including the Constitution of Kenya and the structure of national and county government.
