Economics Tutoring in Nairobi
Economics teaches students to think about choices: how people, firms and governments decide what to produce, what to buy and what to spend. It mixes theory, diagrams, data and written argument, and students need all four to do well. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach Economics one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online.
Curricula and levels we cover
- Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455): the multiple-choice paper and the structured questions paper.
- Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics.
- A-Level Economics: Cambridge International (9708) and Edexcel, covering microeconomics and macroeconomics at AS and A2.
- IB: Diploma Economics at SL and HL, including the internal assessment portfolio of commentaries.
Economics is not a separate KCSE subject. KCSE students meet economic ideas such as demand, supply and money in Business Studies, which we also teach. Our curricula page explains each system.
What an Economics tutor focuses on
The first step is to make sure the core models are secure. If a student is unsure about demand and supply, much of the course becomes difficult. The tutor checks this early and builds from there.
Topics that often need extra work include:
- Elasticity: calculating it and explaining what the number means for a firm or a government.
- Market failure: externalities, public goods and information gaps.
- Market structures and the costs and revenue of firms, at A-Level and IB HL.
- Macroeconomic objectives: growth, inflation, unemployment and the balance of payments.
- Fiscal, monetary and supply-side policy, and the trade-offs between them.
- International trade and exchange rates.
Diagrams and data
Diagrams carry a lot of marks in Economics. A correct, fully labelled diagram that is explained in the text supports the whole answer. Tutors practise each core diagram until students can draw it quickly and accurately, then show them how to use it in an argument. Students also practise reading data from tables and graphs and using it as evidence.
Essay writing and evaluation
At A-Level and IB, the essay questions ask students to evaluate. That means weighing up a policy or a theory, considering the conditions under which it works, and reaching a clear judgement. Tutors teach a structure for these essays and practise it on past questions, with detailed written feedback.
For IB students, tutors help with the internal assessment commentaries: choosing suitable news articles, linking them to the key concepts and applying theory accurately. The commentaries must be the student’s own work.
Before exams, our exam preparation service adds timed papers and targeted revision.

Frequently asked questions
My child finds Economics diagrams confusing. Where do we start?
Usually with demand and supply. Once the basic diagram is clear, the others follow similar logic. Tutors build up diagrams one at a time and link each one to a real example.
Is Economics very mathematical?
Not heavily, at IGCSE. Students need percentages, index numbers, elasticity calculations and graph reading. At A-Level and IB HL, there is more quantitative work, and tutors cover it directly.
Do you help with IB Economics commentaries?
Yes. Tutors explain the criteria and help your child choose articles and apply theory well, within the IB’s rules on academic honesty.
