Geography Tutoring in Nairobi
Geography covers a wide range: physical processes such as rivers, weather and tectonics, human topics such as population and development, and practical skills such as map reading and data analysis. Students often do well in one part and struggle in another. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach Geography one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online, and we focus on the parts your child finds hardest.

What a Geography tutor focuses on
Good Geography answers do three things: explain a process clearly, support it with a real example, and use the correct terms. Many students know the content but write answers that are too general. Tutors teach them to be specific.
Topics that often need attention include:
- Physical processes: rivers, coasts, plate tectonics, weathering and weather systems.
- Human geography: population, migration, urbanisation, development and economic activity.
- Case studies: knowing a small number of examples in real detail, with names, places and figures from the student’s own notes.
- Environmental management and sustainability.
Map work and geographical skills
Skills questions carry a significant share of the marks in most Geography exams, and they can be learned with practice. Tutors work through:
- Topographical map reading: grid references, scale, distance, direction, contours and relief.
- Describing patterns on maps and photographs.
- Drawing and interpreting graphs, including the statistical methods in KCSE.
- Calculations such as area, gradient and percentage change.
For KCSE students, map work and photograph work in Paper 1 and Paper 2 can be a reliable source of marks once the method is clear. For IGCSE students, the skills paper rewards the same careful habits.
Fieldwork and coursework
Fieldwork appears in KCSE, in the IGCSE coursework or Alternative to Coursework paper, and in the IB internal assessment. Tutors help students understand how to form a hypothesis, choose a sampling method, present data and draw conclusions. For assessed coursework, the tutor guides the method and explains the criteria. The work itself must be the student’s own.
Essay writing at A-Level and IB
Longer essay questions at A-Level and IB ask students to evaluate and reach a judgement. Tutors teach essay planning, how to build an argument across paragraphs, and how to use case studies as evidence rather than as description. Before exams, our exam preparation service adds timed essays and past paper practice.

Frequently asked questions
My child finds map work confusing. Can a tutor help?
Yes. Map work follows clear methods, and most students improve once they practise them step by step with a real map in front of them. Tutors use past paper maps so the practice matches the exam.
How many case studies does my child need?
It depends on the syllabus. A tutor checks what the specification asks for and helps your child build a short, detailed set of case studies rather than many thin ones.
Do you help with the IB Geography fieldwork?
Yes. Tutors explain the criteria and help with planning, data presentation and analysis, within the IB’s rules on academic honesty.
