Biology Tutoring in Nairobi

Biology rewards students who understand processes, not just those who memorise diagrams. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach Biology one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online. Our centre also has its own science lab, so students can do the practical work that so many schools have little time for.

Whether your child is starting secondary science or preparing for A-Level or IB examinations, we match them with a tutor who knows their syllabus in detail.

Curricula and levels we cover

  • CBC/CBE: Integrated Science in Junior School, with Biology content taught alongside chemistry and physics, and KJSEA preparation.
  • Cambridge Checkpoint and Common Entrance: life processes, cells, ecology and simple investigations.
  • Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610): Core and Extended, including the multiple-choice and theory papers, and the practical test or the Alternative to Practical paper.
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology and the Biology content in Double Award Science.
  • A-Level Biology: Cambridge International (9700) and Edexcel, at AS and A2, including the practical skills papers.
  • IB Diploma Biology: SL and HL, with support for the internal assessment investigation.
  • KCSE Biology: Paper 1, Paper 2 and the Paper 3 practical, across Form 1 to Form 4.

Our curricula page explains how these systems differ if you are choosing between them.

What a Biology tutor focuses on

Biology has a lot of content, and students often feel they must learn all of it by heart. A good tutor shows them how the topics connect. Respiration links to photosynthesis. Enzymes link to digestion. Genetics links to evolution. Once a student sees the links, there is much less to memorise.

Topics that students often find difficult include:

  • Cell transport: diffusion, osmosis and active transport, and water potential at A-Level.
  • Photosynthesis and respiration, especially the biochemistry at A-Level and IB.
  • Inheritance and genetic crosses, including probability in Punnett squares.
  • Homeostasis, hormones and the nervous system.
  • Ecology calculations and the interpretation of data.

Exam questions in Biology are precise. A student can understand a topic and still lose marks because they use the wrong term or leave out a key step. Tutors teach students to write answers that match the language of the mark scheme, and they use past papers to build that habit.

Practical skills and our science lab

Practical work is assessed in every Biology course we teach, either in a practical exam or through written questions about experiments. Students who have never handled the equipment find these questions hard, because they have to imagine every step.

At our science lab at the Riverside Drive centre, students do the practicals themselves. Typical work includes food tests, microscopy and drawing from slides, enzyme investigations, osmosis experiments and measuring the rate of photosynthesis. Tutors then show them how to record results, draw tables and graphs, identify variables, and evaluate their method. You can read more on our science practicals page.

For KCSE students, this is direct preparation for Paper 3. For IGCSE and A-Level students, it supports both the practical papers and the Alternative to Practical questions.

Frequently asked questions

My child knows the content but scores low in exams. Why?

This is common in Biology. Marks depend on precise wording and on answering the exact question asked. A tutor reviews your child’s past answers, shows where marks slip away, and practises structured responses until they become a habit.

Can my child use the lab if they take lessons at home or online?

Yes. Many families combine regular lessons at home or online with practical sessions at the centre. We can plan this with you at the consultation.

Do you help with the IB Biology internal assessment?

A tutor can help your child understand the criteria, plan a sound investigation and analyse data correctly. The work itself must be your child’s own, in line with IB rules.

If exams are close, our exam preparation programme gives a structured revision plan built around past papers.
