Chemistry Tutoring in Nairobi
Chemistry asks students to do several things at once: understand particles they cannot see, use mathematics, and remember a large amount of factual detail. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach Chemistry one-on-one, at your home anywhere in Nairobi, at our centre on Riverside Drive, or online. Students can also do practical work in our on-site science lab.
We match each student with a tutor who knows the exact syllabus they follow, from first lessons in secondary science to A-Level and IB HL.
Curricula and levels we cover
- CBC/CBE: the chemistry strand of Integrated Science in Junior School, and KJSEA preparation.
- Cambridge Checkpoint and Common Entrance: states of matter, mixtures, simple reactions and acids.
- Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620): Core and Extended, the theory papers, and the practical test or Alternative to Practical paper.
- Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry and the Chemistry content in Double Award Science.
- A-Level Chemistry: Cambridge International (9701) and Edexcel, covering physical, inorganic and organic chemistry at AS and A2, plus the practical skills papers.
- IB Diploma Chemistry: SL and HL, with support for the internal assessment.
- KCSE Chemistry: Paper 1, Paper 2 and the Paper 3 practical.
See our curricula page for more on each system.
What a Chemistry tutor focuses on
Many students fall behind in Chemistry at one particular point and never fully recover. The most common point is the mole. If a student does not understand moles, then reacting masses, concentrations, titration calculations and gas volumes all become guesswork. Our tutors check this early and rebuild it carefully if needed.
Other topics that students often find difficult include:
- Writing and balancing equations, including ionic equations and half-equations.
- Bonding and structure, and explaining physical properties from them.
- Electrolysis and redox.
- Energetics, rates and equilibrium.
- Organic chemistry: naming compounds, functional groups and reaction pathways. At A-Level and IB, reaction mechanisms add another layer.
A tutor teaches each topic in a logical order, practises calculations until the steps are automatic, and gives students simple ways to organise the factual content, such as tables of tests for ions and gases, or a map of organic reactions.
Practical skills and our science lab
Practical skills are assessed in every Chemistry course we teach. In KCSE, Paper 3 is a practical exam. In IGCSE, students sit either a practical test or the Alternative to Practical paper. At A-Level, practical skills papers test planning, observation and analysis.
Students who have done the experiments themselves answer these questions with much more confidence. In our science lab at the Riverside Drive centre, students carry out titrations, qualitative analysis of cations and anions, rates of reaction experiments, preparation of salts and simple energy change measurements. Tutors show them how to record readings to the correct precision, process results and evaluate sources of error. Our science practicals page has more detail.
Practical sessions work well alongside regular theory lessons, whether those happen at home, at the centre or online.
Exam preparation
Chemistry mark schemes reward specific language and clear working. As exams approach, tutors work through past papers with your child, mark them against the official mark schemes and target the question types that cost the most marks. Our exam preparation service adds a structured revision plan for the final months.

Frequently asked questions
My child struggles with Chemistry calculations. Is it a maths problem?
Sometimes. Weak ratio, rearranging formulae or rounding can make Chemistry calculations hard. The tutor checks this in the first lessons and fixes any maths gaps alongside the Chemistry.
Does my child need practical sessions if they sit the Alternative to Practical paper?
It helps a great deal. The paper asks students to describe and evaluate experiments. Students who have done those experiments find it much easier to picture what happens and to write precise answers.
Do you teach organic chemistry at A-Level and IB HL?
Yes. We match these students with tutors who teach at that level regularly, including reaction mechanisms and synthesis routes.
