Computer Science Tutoring in Nairobi

Computer Science combines theory, such as how data is stored and how networks work, with practical problem solving in code. Students often find one half much easier than the other. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach Computer Science and computing one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online, with tutors who can both explain the theory and code with your child.

Curricula and levels we cover

  • Primary and Junior School: digital skills and early programming for Cambridge Primary and Checkpoint learners, and the computer and coding content in CBC/CBE.
  • Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478): Paper 1, Computer Systems, and Paper 2, Algorithms, Programming and Logic.
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Computer Science.
  • A-Level Computer Science: Cambridge International (9618), including the theory papers and the practical programming papers at AS and A2.
  • IB: Diploma Computer Science at SL and HL, including the internal assessment solution.
  • KCSE Computer Studies: the theory paper and the practical paper.

Our curricula page explains how each system is structured.

Theory topics

The theory side of Computer Science has a lot of precise content. Topics that often need attention include:

  • Data representation: binary, hexadecimal, two’s complement, and how images and sound are stored.
  • Logic gates and truth tables.
  • Computer architecture, the fetch-execute cycle and memory.
  • Networks, the internet and protocols.
  • Security, data transmission and error checking.
  • At A-Level and IB: data structures, databases and SQL, operating systems and more advanced theory.

Tutors explain each topic with clear examples and diagrams, then practise exam questions so students learn the precise wording the mark schemes expect.

Programming and problem solving

Programming is where many students get stuck. Reading code is one skill. Writing it from a blank page is another. Tutors build both, step by step.

  • Writing and tracing algorithms in pseudocode and flowcharts, using trace tables.
  • Core constructs: variables, selection, iteration, arrays, procedures and functions.
  • Standard algorithms such as linear search, binary search and sorting.
  • Programming in the language your school uses, commonly Python, Java or Visual Basic.
  • Testing, debugging and choosing test data.

For Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level, tutors make sure students can write in the pseudocode style that the exam uses, which differs from real programming languages in small but important ways. For KCSE Computer Studies, the practical paper uses applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and desktop publishing, and tutors practise these hands-on.

Projects and internal assessment

The IB internal assessment asks students to build a real solution for a client. Tutors help students understand the criteria, plan their project and develop their programming skills. The project must be the student’s own work, and our tutors respect the IB’s rules on academic honesty.

Exam preparation

Close to exams, tutors work through past papers, especially the programming and algorithm questions, which carry many marks and reward practice. Our exam preparation service adds a structured revision plan.

Frequently asked questions

My child has never coded. Can they still take IGCSE Computer Science?

Yes, many students start with no experience. A tutor teaches the basics in a logical order and gives plenty of short practice tasks so that confidence builds steadily.

Which programming language will the tutor use?

The language your child’s school uses. Tell us at the consultation and we match a tutor who works in that language.

Do lessons need a computer?

For programming lessons, yes. Your child can use their own laptop at home, at the centre or online. Theory lessons can take place without one.
