Accounting Tutoring in Nairobi

Accounting is a subject of method and accuracy. Students who understand the logic of double entry usually do well. Students who try to memorise layouts without understanding them often struggle, because one wrong entry spreads through the whole set of accounts. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach Accounting one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online.

Curricula and levels we cover

  • Cambridge IGCSE Accounting (0452).
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Accounting.
  • A-Level Accounting: Cambridge International (9706), at AS and A2.
  • KCSE: there is no separate Accounting subject in KCSE, but the book-keeping content in Business Studies covers similar ground, including source documents, ledgers, the trial balance and final accounts. We teach this as part of Business Studies.
  • IB: the IB Diploma has no separate Accounting course. The finance content of Business Management, including final accounts and ratio analysis, is taught within that subject.

See our curricula page for more on each system.

What an Accounting tutor focuses on

The tutor starts with the foundations: the accounting equation, debits and credits, and the books of prime entry. Many later problems trace back to a weak understanding of double entry. Once this is secure, lessons move to the topics that build on it.

Topics that students commonly find difficult include:

  • Ledger accounts, balancing off and the trial balance.
  • Correction of errors and suspense accounts.
  • Bank reconciliation statements.
  • Adjustments: accruals, prepayments, depreciation and irrecoverable debts.
  • Income statements and statements of financial position for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.
  • Control accounts and incomplete records.
  • At A-Level: manufacturing accounts, statements of cash flows, costing methods, budgeting and investment appraisal.
  • Ratio analysis and written interpretation of results.

Accuracy, layout and written answers

Accounting exams reward correct format and clear workings. Tutors teach students to set out each statement in the expected layout, show their workings so that method marks are available, and check totals before they move on.

Students are often surprised that Accounting papers also include written questions. They may be asked to explain an accounting concept, compare two methods, or advise a business owner using the figures they have calculated. Tutors practise these written answers too, so that students can explain what the numbers mean as well as produce them.

Exam practice

Accounting questions are long and time is tight. Tutors work through past papers with your child, build speed with practice, and show how to keep going when one figure goes wrong so that later marks are not lost. Our exam preparation service adds a structured revision plan for the final weeks before exams.

Frequently asked questions

My child’s trial balance never balances. Can a tutor fix this?

Yes. This almost always comes from gaps in double entry or in the treatment of particular items. The tutor finds the specific error pattern and practises those entries until they are reliable.

Is Accounting a good choice at IGCSE or A-Level?

It suits students who like structured, logical work and are careful with detail. We can discuss your child’s strengths at the consultation, though subject choice is a decision for you, your child and the school.

Do you teach the KCSE book-keeping content?

Yes, as part of KCSE Business Studies tutoring. The same double-entry principles apply, and tutors work with the format that KCSE questions expect.
