English Tutoring in Nairobi
English affects every other subject. A student who reads slowly or writes unclear answers will lose marks in History, Biology and Business as well as in English itself. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach English Language, English Literature and English as a Second Language one-on-one, at your home in Nairobi, at our Riverside Drive centre, or online.
We match each student with a tutor who knows their syllabus, their set texts and the way their papers are marked.

English Language: reading and writing
English Language exams test two broad skills: understanding what you read and writing clearly for a purpose. Students often lose marks because they summarise when they should analyse, or describe when they should argue.
A tutor works on:
- Close reading: finding evidence and explaining how a writer’s choices create an effect.
- Summary and directed writing, with attention to word limits and to the exact task.
- Descriptive, narrative and argumentative writing, planned and structured.
- Grammar, punctuation, sentence variety and vocabulary.
English Literature: set texts and essays
Literature students need to know their texts well and write essays that make a clear argument. Tutors read the set texts with your child, discuss themes, characters and context, and teach them to build a point with short, well-chosen quotations. For unseen poetry and prose, tutors teach a method that works on any passage.
English as a Second Language
Many of our students speak another language at home or have moved to Nairobi from abroad. For these students, tutors build vocabulary, grammar and confidence in speaking and listening, as well as preparing them for ESL exams where relevant. The goal is for the student to cope comfortably with English across all their subjects.
How lessons work
The first lessons include a short reading and writing task so the tutor can see your child’s strengths and weak points. Lessons then mix skill-building with exam practice. Tutors mark written work in detail and explain each correction, because students improve fastest when they understand why a sentence did not work. Before exams, our exam preparation service adds timed practice and past papers.

Frequently asked questions
Can you help a child who reads well but writes poorly?
Yes, and this is common. Writing needs planning, structure and practice with feedback. The tutor sets short pieces often, marks them closely and works on one weakness at a time.
Do tutors know my child’s Literature set texts?
We ask for the set texts at the consultation and match a tutor who knows them or will prepare them thoroughly before lessons start.
Do you support students with dyslexia?
Yes. Tutors adapt lessons to the way your child learns, with structured reading and writing strategies. Please tell us about any assessment or school support plan at the consultation.
