Mathematics Tutoring in Nairobi

Mathematics is the subject parents ask us about most often, and it is the one where small gaps cause the biggest problems later. At Cares Home-based Tuition we teach maths one-on-one, from early number work in primary school to A-Level Further Maths. Lessons take place at your home anywhere in Nairobi, at our centre at Daphton Court on Riverside Drive, or online.

Every tutor we match is experienced in the exact syllabus your child follows. A child who is behind gets steady rebuilding. A child who is ahead gets stretched. Most of our students sit somewhere in between, and they need a tutor who can find the topic that is holding everything else back.

Curricula and levels we cover

Maths looks different in each curriculum, so we plan lessons around the specification your child will be examined on. You can read more about each system on our curricula page.

  • Primary maths: Cambridge Primary and Checkpoint, CBC/CBE Mathematics, KPSEA preparation, and Common Entrance at 11+ and 13+. We focus on number sense, place value, fractions, times tables and word problems.
  • Junior secondary (CBC/CBE): Mathematics through Junior School and preparation for KJSEA.
  • Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580): Core and Extended tiers, with calculator and non-calculator papers. We also teach IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) for students who want a head start on A-Level.
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics: Foundation and Higher tiers.
  • A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics: Cambridge International and Edexcel, covering pure mathematics, mechanics, and probability and statistics at AS and A2.
  • IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), at SL and HL, including support with planning the internal assessment exploration.
  • SAT Math: algebra, problem solving and data analysis, advanced maths, and geometry and trigonometry, with practice in timed conditions.
  • KCSE Mathematics: Paper 1 and Paper 2, across the full Form 1 to Form 4 content.

What a maths tutor focuses on

The first lessons are diagnostic. The tutor works through a range of questions with your child to see where understanding is secure and where it breaks down. In maths, a weak area is often older than it looks. A Form 3 student who struggles with quadratics may really have a problem with negative numbers or algebraic fractions.

Once the gaps are clear, lessons follow a simple pattern:

  • Re-teach the weak topic from the foundations, with worked examples.
  • Practise until the method is reliable, not just familiar.
  • Connect it to exam-style questions so the child sees how it is tested.
  • Revisit it a few weeks later to make sure it has stayed.

Topics that commonly cause difficulty include algebraic manipulation, simultaneous equations, functions, trigonometry, vectors, probability, and calculus at A-Level and IB. For younger children the sticking points are usually fractions, ratio and multi-step word problems.

Exam technique and past papers

Knowing the maths is only part of the result. Students also lose marks through missing working, wrong rounding, misread questions and poor timing. As exams approach, our tutors work through past papers with your child, mark them against the official mark schemes, and show exactly where marks were lost.

For students with exams coming up, our exam preparation service adds a structured revision plan, timed practice and a focus on the topics that carry the most marks.

Frequently asked questions

My child is in the IGCSE Core tier. Can tutoring help them move to Extended?

Often, yes. The tutor first checks whether the Core content is secure, then introduces the Extended topics step by step. The decision on tier entry rests with the school, but we can give you an honest view of your child’s readiness based on their work in lessons.

Do you teach Further Maths and IB Maths HL?

Yes. We match these students with tutors who teach at that level regularly. Further Maths and HL move quickly, so many students take lessons through the whole course rather than only before exams.

Can a tutor help with the IB maths internal assessment?

A tutor can help your child choose a workable topic, understand the assessment criteria and check the mathematics they use. The exploration must be your child’s own work, and our tutors respect the IB’s academic honesty rules.
